Berdiri sejak tahun 1878, universitas ini sekarang memiliki 6.000 mahasiswa. Pada awal berdiri, universitas ini bernama Ashland College, hingga pada 2 Mei 1989 berubah nama menjadi Ashland University sampai sekarang.
