Although the UK is not home to the most sought after engineering degrees in the world, there are universities that can provide high-quality courses in that field. The undisputed king of the sciences of London, Imperial College London, and a highly reputable all-rounder, Queen Mary University London, beg to differ with the global opinion of the UK’s engineering scene. These unis will be discussed in terms of main strength, preparation for work and intensity.

Queen Mary University of London

Overview

Queen Mary’s engineering courses are well-known to be some of the best in London. This university provides one of the best options for the course in London with a relatively realistic chance of admission.

Special Quality

As a Russell Group university, Queen Mary is appropriately accommodating towards research. For engineering courses, such as Material Science and Engineering, Queen Mary shows its dedication for research in various forms. For example, this course has a module is dedicated to practical learning involving lab testing. Modules set up in similar ways are incredibly beneficial for students who are more research-oriented in their career paths. Additionally, Queen Mary is one of the only unis in the UK to offer a course in Material Science and Engineering. This course is also very different to what students may find in Indonesia.

Preparation for Work

Queen Mary shows its efforts in preparing students for work in different activities in the classroom. Students will experience these types of activities in his course. For example, within Material Science and Engineering there is an activity called problem based learning. In this activity students are required to solve an open ended question within a randomly selected group. Students find this beneficial as it helps prepare students for working in groups in working job scenarios and allows him to improve his ability to be open minded to new ideas within discussions.

Intensity

The level of intensity studying Engineering in Queen Mary is relatively manageable. In terms of time spent studying, on average a student can spend 5 hours a day. He adds 2 hours of studying to his routine when revising a new chapter. Additionally, the competition between students is relaxed most of the time. Students find their peers to be helpful during lectures and problem-solving activities in class. However, during exams and when doing coursework students tend to become more competitive.

Overall, Queen Mary is a great choice for a research oriented student. Also, it helps students prepare for the future with classes that combine theoretical knowledge and practical soft-skills. Studying at Queen Mary can be manageable due to the study time required and relatively helpful student body.

London Series: LSE for Law, Jurusan Hukum dalam Salah Satu Universitas Terbaik di Dunia (English)

Studying Law will expose students to a subject that encompasses various different facets of human life in fields such as finance law or family law. LSE Law gives excellent support to its students. LSE Law, like any other law course, can be a very intense and stressful course, especially since LSE Law is academically rigorous. To alleviate the burdens it places on students, LSE provides a wide range of support. For example, students are assigned an academic mentor and a personal wellbeing mentor who they can turn to when they experience difficulties both personally and academically. This is incredibly helpful as it shows that students are being well taken care of and they can focus on preparing themselves for the future with less burdens to bear.

Preparation for Work

Within LSE Law students are exposed to opportunities that will be beneficial for the career from the department and their cohort. Firstly, the department and Law Society are extremely influential in helping students connect with the professional world. For example, in November of 2019 the LSE Law Society held an event called the Know the City legal forum. Events such as this are in abundance throughout the year for LSE students and extremely useful in getting in touch with barristers’ chambers and law firms.

Also, the student body pushes each other to become higher achievers outside of the classroom.There is a strong Linkedin culture where students are expected to post what internship or leadership positions they get selected for. This is beneficial in both pushing students to become more proactive and improve their qualifications. Also, this level of competition is complemented by the aforementioned extensive student support to ensure that students are indulging in this culture healthily.

Intensity

LSE Law’s intensity varies depending on a student’s personal ambitions. there are ways for students to clear up time. For example, as lectures are recorded and an extensive amount of further reading is optional, students are able to select how much work they can do. Also, contact hours in a day are of a rational amount at around 6 hours a day.

Overall, LSE Law is a great choice for a student who wants to pursue their academic ambitions in a supported environment. It can also push students to work harder in terms of extracurricular positions and is definitely reliable in securing a job in the future.

London Series: UCL for Foundation, Foundation Program untuk Murid Internasional dari Uni Top 10 Dunia (English)

Foundation Programs are primarily targeted for international students who did not study a curriculum which awards grades accepted for admission into UK unis such as IB or A-Levels. These program are set up by universities and other education institutions who wish to assist international students to study in the UK. As a result, you will primarily befriend international students who are from asian countries, the middle-eastern countries and some European countries such as Russia and Ukraine. You will also find students who preferred taking foundation courses as opposed to conventional international high-school curriculums. 

Indonesian students who opt into attending foundation programs are usually graduates of high-schools that teach the national curriculum and don’t mind spending an extra year studying for grades before the typically 3-year UK university course that awaits them. Furthermore, some foundation programs award grades that also allow admission into UK foreign universities such as US universities.

UCL Undergraduate Preparatory Certificate

Overview

UCL’s UPC is set up by UCL themselves where they run a foundation program for the humanities (UPCH) and science and engineering (UPCSE). This is a 1 year course which equips students for university life and its ability to do so is very reputable amongst UK unis.  Its classes are set up in the typical UK uni format (Seminars of smaller group discussions and Lectures involving all students of the module) with high-quality tutors or lecturers who graduated from universities such as Oxford and Cambridge. Students of this foundation program are entitled to all the facilities and services (student support, communities, etc) that are made available by UCL. This account of UCL Undergraduate Preparatory Certificate is Provided by Sutan Akbar, a graduate of the program and recipient of an offer for Politics and International Relations from UCL. 

Core Teaching Principle

UPC’s main focus education-wise is spending the entirety of the year drilling the UK uni mindset; arguing academically using critical thinking. For example, in the UPC you will be required to write a research project (RP) about one of your main subject modules. If you are doing a research project for Modern European History and Politics (MEHP), a UCPH’s core subject module, you might focus on a topic such as the Enlightenment. A possible scenario in writing your RP is discussing whether the Enlightenment was beneficial to humanity or not. At first glance, the general consensus would be that the Enlightenment was crucial in the development of humanity. However, if you could use evidence such as the viewpoint of parties opposing the Enlightenment such as monarchies and anti-enlightenment philosophers, you could argue against that notion. This example shows that UPC is able to equip you with tools that allow you to manipulate information to whatever you desire it to represent. This is extremely crucial in UK uni as most assessments, especially in the humanities, require analysis of information. A students’ interpretation of that information determines the quality and message conveyed from the analysis. 

Progression Rate

In terms of progression rate, UPC is very reliable in getting students an offer from unis. Firstly, It is highly regarded amongst a vast majority of UK unis so its grades are well received in the UCAS application process. Additionally, UPC is one of the few foundation programs which annually progresses students into Imperial College London and LSE plus occasionally into Oxbridge. However, there are some outliers such as City University of London who demand slightly more difficult grades from UPC students.

Furthermore, there are a wide range of subjects that are guaranteed a conditional offer for UPC students such as History, Politics and Economics, Biomedical Sciences, Mechanical Engineering and Economics and Statistics. This is an incredibly important fact to note as it will make a students application process much less stressful.

In addition, UPC provides extensive support during the application process. This is shown in the weekly meetings with your personal tutor to discuss Uni choices and personal statements. Although these sessions may be very rigorous, they are very beneficial specifically in writing a good personal statement as the tutors have years of experience and success in that matter.

However, a notable downside to UPC is that its final exams are known to be quite difficult. Annually, there have been cases where students were not able to attend their first choice uni due to their final exam grades being insufficient. This is due to the relative difficulty of these exams.

Nasihat Untuk Wanita Generasi Berikutnya Di STEM

Karena perempuan secara dramatis kurang terwakili di semua studi dan karier STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), bagaimana kita membuat langkah-langkah untuk menutup kesenjangan gender dan mendorong generasi inovator perempuan berikutnya? Pada saat teknologi terus mengubah cara hidup, bekerja, dan belajar kita, kebutuhan untuk menutup kesenjangan gender STEM menjadi semakin penting.

Dengan mengingat misi itu, Forbes bermitra dengan Audi of America pada bulan Maret 2019 untuk menjadi tuan rumah “Idea Inkubator” tahunan kedua, sebuah program yang didedikasikan untuk menginspirasi para pemimpin STEM masa depan dengan menyatukan bakat yang muncul untuk memecahkan tantangan dunia nyata melalui lensa STEM. Siswa dari New York University Tandon School of Engineering ditugaskan untuk mengembangkan solusi inovatif di sekitar dampak kendaraan listrik pada mobilitas perkotaan. Dua tim siswa terbaik yang menang berjalan dengan penghargaan dari “Audi Drive Progress Grant,” beasiswa gabungan $ 50.000 untuk studi mereka.

Saran saya untuk wanita yang ingin memasuki bidang STEM adalah jangan takut untuk merasa tidak nyaman. Sering kali, Anda mungkin menemukan peluang yang menurut Anda tidak bisa dilakukan, tetapi kenyataannya adalah Anda benar-benar bisa. Hal-hal yang perlu Anda ketahui tentang belajar di University of Cambridge


Biaya £ 9.250 untuk sarjana di 2019-20. Biaya untuk siswa internasional berkisar dari £ 19.197 hingga £ 50.130.

Jika Anda seorang mahasiswa sarjana Inggris atau EU dengan pendapatan rumah tangga di bawah £ 42.620 maka Anda kemungkinan memenuhi syarat untuk Cambridge Bursary hingga £ 3.500 per tahun.



Sebagian besar siswa UK tidak perlu mengajukan permohonan secara terpisah untuk Cambridge Bursary, Anda akan secara otomatis dinilai oleh Student Loans Company sebagai bagian dari permohonan Anda untuk Keuangan mahasiswa dari Pemerintah Inggris. Cambridge Bursary tidak tersedia untuk siswa asing.
