London Series: UCL for Law, Universitas Hukum Nomor 1 di London (English)

Studying Law will expose students to a subject that encompasses various different facets of human life in fields such as finance law or family law. These legal equivalents of normal human life should be viewed with the presence of humanity as matters regarding the subject ultimately determine people’s welfare.

In a global city such as London, the study of law is perfectly complemented by the city’s legal sector and its vast opportunities. In an attempt to facilitate such academic endeavours, it also offers several choices of unis that equip aspiring-law practitioners with high quality education. The unis that will be discussed are UCL, LSE, KCL and Queen Mary University of London.

University College London

Overview

UCL’s Law program is widely regarded as one of the best in the whole of the UK and the whole world. They boast one of the lowest admission rates and a high-quality teaching staff to educate their students. This account of University College London is provided for Flora Chung, a second year student Law student of the institution.

Special Quality

Amongst its many advantages in teaching law, a particular strength of UCL Law lies in its extracurricular events. Primarily, UCL’s law society takes a very active role in arranging a wide range of activities for its students’ future careers. For example, the Law society has career events every Monday which hosts scheduled visits from top law firms and networking events. A notable presentation Flora recalls was one by Weil Gotshal and Manges. This firm emphasised their extra activities beyond commercial legal practice such as fulfilling their social responsibilies and promoting diversity programs. For example, they presented their involvement in supporting students of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC, PALS and PENCILS program in exposing young adults to career opportunities in the legal professional world. These events alternate their focus on careers as barristers and solicitors so all students receive an even level of support.

Also, UCL’s Law Society holds socials to strengthen the bond between students within the faculty. The Law society holds many balls or socials such as a 2 week law student only Freshers Fortnight which helped Flora build relationships with her fellow peers.

Preparation for Work

UCL is able to prepare their students for work with a mixture of in and out of classroom benefits. For starters, UCL’s teaching staff is world class consisting of leading experts in the field that give insightful tutorials and lectures which are able to encourage debate and critical thinking. For instance, Flora’s tutor in her Public Law module was able to teach her an efficient way of analysing a case. This involved analysing a case from back to front where the conclusion is read beforehand and linked to the paragraphs above it in order to find the final decision of the case. Then the judges decision is discussed. This helped Flora gain a new technique to analyse cases more efficiently and practice a skill used in real life legal practice.

Furthermore, the Law society takes a massive role in connecting students with the professional world. Besides the career and social events previously mentioned, the UCL Law Society provides amazing career support in other forms. For example, the mentorship program they host is helpful in helping students secure internships/schemes.

Intensity

UCL Law’s intensity level is quite high but it is an enjoyable experience. Flora notes that although the course is fast-paced and challenging, curricular and extracurricular activities involving the course are varied, interesting and stimulating. However, she also  expresses that a notable downside is the amount of reading that is demanded for every lecture and tutorial.

In general, UCL Law is an incredible option for any law student. Their Law Society can provide an amazing social and professionally preparatory experience while their in class lessons prove to keep a student engaged and stimulated.

London Series: KCL for Foundation, Foundation Program Ternama di Pusat London (English)

Foundation Programs are primarily targeted for international students who did not study a curriculum which awards grades accepted for admission into UK unis such as IB or A-Levels. These program are set up by universities and other education institutions who wish to assist international students to study in the UK. As a result, you will primarily befriend international students who are from asian countries, the middle-eastern countries and some European countries such as Russia and Ukraine. You will also find students who preferred taking foundation courses as opposed to conventional international high-school curriculums. 

Indonesian students who opt into attending foundation programs are usually graduates of high-schools that teach the national curriculum and don’t mind spending an extra year studying for grades before the typically 3-year UK university course that awaits them. Furthermore, some foundation programs award grades that also allow admission into UK foreign universities such as US universities.

Kings International Foundation Program

Overview

Kings International Foundation Program is hosted by King’s College London and is targeted for international students looking to enter into UK unis but don’t have the necessary qualifications. The lessons are carried out in three different formats; lectures, seminars and support class. The lectures and seminars are similar to conventional uni format where lectures involve the entire class and seminars are for smaller group discussions. However, the support classes are dedicated to focusing on assignments and supplementing seminars. For example, the assignments given in the support classes include essay practice such as finding sources for essays and the proper way to write essays in general.

Additionally, students of this program receive access to all services and facilities that King’s offers. Core Teaching Principle

A main teaching principle this program practices is normalising widely accepted academic conventions in university tasks. For example, the main activity Davinka practices this etiquette is essay-writing. Davinka shares that in Indonesia, she was used to being assessed based on multiple choice exams. On the other hand, in this program she found that her analytical and critical thinking skills were tested as most assignments were in the form of essays. She found that teaching the proper way to write academic essays by prioritising analysis over description and receiving constant feedback from her tutors has helped her immensely. She now feels that she is much more prepared in tackling university assignments due Kings International Foundation Program helping with her transition.

Progression Rate

In terms of progression this program is very reliable and is very supportive in a student’s application process. The program provides students with a personal tutor who assists the student in the form of helping write personal statements, helping choose unis suitable for each individual student and monitoring students’ grades to allow them to achieve their needed grades. Many top unis such as LSE and UCL admit graduates of this program into courses within their respective institutions. As a result, Davinka shares that many of the students within her cohort received offers from top unis such as UCL, Queen Mary and King’s themselves. Also, this foundation program is very reputable amongst UK unis.

Mengapa Gelar Manusia “Yang Tidak Berharga” Membuatmu Siap Menghadapi Hidup?

Saat kita memasuki tahun 2020, kita menjalankan kisah Kehidupan Kerja sangat baik, paling banyak pengertahuan, dan paling penting dari tahun 2019.

Di universitas, ketika saya memberi tahu orang-orang bahwa saya belajar untuk gelar sejarah, tanggapannya hampir selalu sama: “Anda ingin menjadi guru?”. Tidak, seorang jurnalis. “Oh. Tapi Anda tidak mengambil jurusan komunikasi? ”

Ketika pendidikan di universitas adalah bidang yang hanya segelintir orang yang mendapatkan hak istimewa, mungkin tidak ada asumsi bahwa gelar harus menjadi batu loncatan langsung menuju karier.
