Brunel University of London

Overview

Brunel University London is known to have a reputable Finance and Accounting course. Although it is located away from most of the glitz and glamour of London, Brunel makes up for it with its well delivered education.

Special Quality

Brunel dedicates the Accounting and Finance course’s curriculum to fully prepare students for their future careers. First, Brunel teaches this course thoroughly and students will be given more than sufficient knowledge in each subject. Subjects such as Financial Markets and skill such as data-modelling are taught to students to strengthen their knowledge rigorously. This guarantees that Brunel’s delivery of the course is on par with the top unis in the UK.

Also, Brunel’s curriculum allows students to choose from a wide range of careers within accountancy. In their latter years as a student of the course, the students will be able to customise the subjects they learn. This is to enable them to specialise into specific areas of accountancy such as taxation and auditing.

Preparation for Work

Brunel provides students opportunities to connect with the professional world in a variety of ways. Firstly, Brunel frequently holds career events. These events are extremely useful in exposing students to internship opportunities and future careers within companies such as Goldman Sachs. To support this, Brunel employs mechanisms such as online reminders to help students stay up to date with opportunities that are available to them.

Also, Brunel provides extra service to prepare students for the future through their dedicated career centre. This section of the university can provide students with various services. For example, a student is able to take a psychometric test to help them decide on a future career.

Intensity

In terms of intensity, Brunel is relatively bearable. First, a week can be considered relatively manageable. With 4-5 hours of studying in and outside of the classroom complemented by an optional 2 hours of office hours, studying at Brunel can leave a good amount of time for a student to focus on other things. Also, Brunel’s student interaction is quite healthy. Generally, students are very easy going and supportive to one another. There is some competition between students but it is constructive and will serve to help their development.

London Series: QMUL for Law, Universitas Hukum yang Ternama di Inggris (English)

Studying Law will expose students to a subject that encompasses various different facets of human life in fields such as finance law or family law. These legal equivalents of normal human life should be viewed with the presence of humanity as matters regarding the subject ultimately determine people’s welfare.

In a global city such as London, the study of law is perfectly complemented by the city’s legal sector and its vast opportunities. In attempt to facilitate such academic endeavours, it also offers several choices of unis that equip aspiring-law practitioners with high quality education. The unis that will be discussed are UCL, LSE, KCL and Queen Mary University of London.

Queen Mary University of London

Overview

Although its reputation may not be as stellar as UCL or Oxbridge in the UK, Queen Mary’s Law school deserves to be regarded amongst the best law schools in London. This account of Queen Mary University of London Law School is Provided by Zania R. Putri, a second year Law student of the institution.

Special Quality

Coincidentally, Queen Mary’s main strength also ties in its preparing students for work. Firstly, the university has strong connections with the professional legal world. This can be shown within the Queen Mary law club Zania participates in as Head of Marketing which is partnered with 50+ law firms and 10+ banks and are very helpful in networking and securing a profession overall.

Also, Queen Mary provides many placement opportunities at law firms’ pro bono offices. Last year, Zania did her placement at Dentons Pro Bono Clinic as a pro bono assistant. Dentons is a highly regarded law firm and this shows Queen Mary’s ability to assist students in putting theory into practice and increasing the value of a student’s accumulated qualifications. To further add to that, this year she will be working at Queen Mary’s Legal Advice Centre as a legal advisor. This shows that Queen Mary is able to guarantee opportunities as Zania was able to secure one in her second year and the quality of those opportunities are consistently of high quality. Overall, Queen Mary shows great strength in offering students opportunities to learn beyond the classroom which helps them enhance their theoretical understanding, practical capabilities and attractiveness as prospective employees.

Intensity

Queen Mary Law School is quite intense as most law schools are. Firstly, the competition between students is quite intense depending on a student’s career choice. For Zania, Queen Mary Law School is quite intense as she is pursuing a career in commercial law. On the other hand, aspiring to become a solicitor comes with less intense competitiveness. Even so, Zania claims to have found good friends within this competitive setting and believes that this atmosphere is more constructive than destructive.

Also, due to the nature of the legal professional world, a career as a lawyer requires a 2:1. In Queen Mary it is relatively difficult to achieve, but doable.

However, studying law at Queen Mary is very reasonable due to its several flexibilities. First, Queen Mary Law School offers Law in combination with another course such as Business or Politics. This is beneficial to students who are not as committed to the intensity of studying law on its own or who simply wish to branch out and explore other fields of study.

Also, Queen Mary provides excellent student support. Queen Mary provides a wide range of support from academic to personal from their academic advisors, tutors, head of faculty, mental therapist and career advisor.

Moving on, Queen Mary usually requires 6-10 hours of commitment every uni day and 12-17 once exams start. Although this may seem quite intense it still leaves students with time to indulge in extracurricular activities such as the aforementioned placements or competitions in mooting and negotiations.

Overall, Queen Mary Law School is a very good practical university that focuses its strengths outside the classroom coupled with strong support from the university. Even so, grades should be maintained as the legal professional world is cutthroat in its recruitment. So if your preference is a more practical and supportive academic experience then Queen Mary is definitely a good shout.

London Series: UCL for Foundation, Foundation Program untuk Murid Internasional dari Uni Top 10 Dunia (English)

Foundation Programs are primarily targeted for international students who did not study a curriculum which awards grades accepted for admission into UK unis such as IB or A-Levels. These program are set up by universities and other education institutions who wish to assist international students to study in the UK. As a result, you will primarily befriend international students who are from asian countries, the middle-eastern countries and some European countries such as Russia and Ukraine. You will also find students who preferred taking foundation courses as opposed to conventional international high-school curriculums.

Indonesian students who opt into attending foundation programs are usually graduates of high-schools that teach the national curriculum and don’t mind spending an extra year studying for grades before the typically 3-year UK university course that awaits them. Furthermore, some foundation programs award grades that also allow admission into UK foreign universities such as US universities.

UCL Undergraduate Preparatory Certificate

Overview

UCL’s UPC is set up by UCL themselves where they run a foundation program for the humanities (UPCH) and science and engineering (UPCSE). This is a 1 year course which equips students for university life and its ability to do so is very reputable amongst UK unis.  Its classes are set up in the typical UK uni format (Seminars of smaller group discussions and Lectures involving all students of the module) with high-quality tutors or lecturers who graduated from universities such as Oxford and Cambridge. Students of this foundation program are entitled to all the facilities and services (student support, communities, etc) that are made available by UCL. This account of UCL Undergraduate Preparatory Certificate is Provided by Sutan Akbar, a graduate of the program and recipient of an offer for Politics and International Relations from UCL.

Core Teaching Principle

UPC’s main focus education-wise is spending the entirety of the year drilling the UK uni mindset; arguing academically using critical thinking. For example, in the UPC you will be required to write a research project (RP) about one of your main subject modules. If you are doing a research project for Modern European History and Politics (MEHP), a UCPH’s core subject module, you might focus on a topic such as the Enlightenment. A possible scenario in writing your RP is discussing whether the Enlightenment was beneficial to humanity or not. At first glance, the general consensus would be that the Enlightenment was crucial in the development of humanity. However, if you could use evidence such as the viewpoint of parties opposing the Enlightenment such as monarchies and anti-enlightenment philosophers, you could argue against that notion. This example shows that UPC is able to equip you with tools that allow you to manipulate information to whatever you desire it to represent. This is extremely crucial in UK uni as most assessments, especially in the humanities, require analysis of information. A students’ interpretation of that information determines the quality and message conveyed from the analysis.

Progression Rate

In terms of progression rate, UPC is very reliable in getting students an offer from unis. Firstly, It is highly regarded amongst a vast majority of UK unis so its grades are well received in the UCAS application process. Additionally, UPC is one of the few foundation programs which annually progresses students into Imperial College London and LSE plus occasionally into Oxbridge. However, there are some outliers such as City University of London who demand slightly more difficult grades from UPC students.

Furthermore, there are a wide range of subjects that are guaranteed a conditional offer for UPC students such as History, Politics and Economics, Biomedical Sciences, Mechanical Engineering and Economics and Statistics. This is an incredibly important fact to note as it will make a students application process much less stressful.

In addition, UPC provides extensive support during the application process. This is shown in the weekly meetings with your personal tutor to discuss Uni choices and personal statements. Although these sessions may be very rigorous, they are very beneficial specifically in writing a good personal statement as the tutors have years of experience and success in that matter.

However, a notable downside to UPC is that its final exams are known to be quite difficult. Annually, there have been cases where students were not able to attend their first choice uni due to their final exam grades being insufficient. This is due to the relative difficulty of these exams.
