Being in close proximity to Canary Wharf, one of London’s trademark financial districts, universities within London have gained a reputation of being adept in teachings related to the industry. As a result, Economics has become a very sought after program as it is both a rudimentary and flexible field of study involving the financial industry. Universities that offer high quality courses in this subject are UCL and LSE.

Overview

Special Quality

A strength of UCL in its Economics course is the support received from its teaching staff. Economics at UCL is extremely rigorous, especially considering its heavily mathematically-oriented curriculum. UCL supports such difficult academic standards by providing an extensive amount of academic support towards their students. For example, students are given weekly assignments that they will do and be given feedback by their tutors. This is extremely helpful towards a students learning process as not only are they trained to improve their knowledge of economics rigorously, but this is done in tandem with extra care from the teaching staff to ensure that students are developing well. Also, students are always open to consult teaching staff outside of designated teaching time. Tutors are always willing to help students which shows how dedicated UCL is towards its mission of education.

Preparation for Work

UCL mainly prepares students for work by education in the classroom. UCL’s modules are not only designed to equip students with theoretical mastery of economics, but they draw a clear relation between the aforementioned knowledge and its application in real life. For example, the applied economics module teaches students about data collection and how to use STATA. These skills are particularly useful in economic research.

Intensity

The Economics course at UCL is relatively intense. On average, Chris spends 6-8 hours of his day committed to his lessons. Additionally, competition can be intense at times. Applying for internships and academically can be difficult as students are very driven.

Overall, UCL Economics is an extremely suitable course for students who are driven and will be beneficial for the future.

University of Westminster

Overview

Westminster is known for having an extremely supportive learning environment for as they are inclusive and structure their lessons to be constructive instead of rigorous. Accounting at Westminster is a unique option as it is academically fulfilling and helps students prepare for work.

Westminster’s Accounting course offers a unique opportunity in having a placement or study abroad year between year 2 and year 3. First, students may choose to undertake a year long course with a partner institution of Westminster. These institutions are scattered throughout the world in countries such as Germany, Japan, Australia and Denmark. These courses will be taught in English but students with strong fluency in a certain language my eligible to attend courses held in a wider variety of institutions. Also, this course offers a one year placement year for students. Placements take place in prestigious institutions such as HSBC and Barclays Bank. These two programs within the course offer students a unique alternative to the studying that regular uni students do. Not only does it teach students technical knowledge for work, but it also gives students insight in the professional world to ascertain the path they want to take in their careers.

Preparation for Work

Besides the aforementioned placement year and study abroad scheme, Westminster offers a variety of benefits to help students prepare for their careers. First, students will be able to develop their familiarity with CIMA Sage Accounting software and will be able to obtain a certificate validating their capabilities. This is very beneficial as students should be familiar with the typical conventions used in professional accounting and Westminster places an emphasis on that by focusing on it early on. Also, Westminster provides a Bloomberg virtual trading room. This allows students to be able to polish their skills with the state of the art technology along with their peers.

Intensity

Westminster can be considered as relatively less intense and teaches students to be independent in their studies. A student can expect 4-6 hours a day and on other days 1-2 hours of independent study across 3-4 days a week. Also, student interaction is generally chill but can become competitive when performing class activities such as group-based games.

In conclusion, the University of Westminster is a great choice for Accounting as its stimulating and encouraging environment is prime for studying.

Also, Brunel’s student interaction is quite healthy. Generally, students are very easy going and supportive to one another. There is some competition between students but it is constructive and will serve to help their development.

The undisputed king of the sciences of London, Imperial College London, and a highly reputable all-rounder, Queen Mary University London, beg to differ with the global opinion of the UK’s engineering scene. These unis will be discussed in terms of main strength, preparation for work and intensity.

Queen Mary University of London

Overview

Queen Mary’s engineering courses are well-known to be some of the best in London. This university provides one of the best options for the course in London with a relatively realistic chance of admission.

As a Russell Group university, Queen Mary is appropriately accommodating towards research. For engineering courses, such as Material Science and Engineering, Queen Mary shows its dedication for research in various forms. For example, this course has a module is dedicated to practical learning involving lab testing. Modules set up in similar ways are incredibly beneficial for students who are more research-oriented in their career paths. Additionally, Queen Mary is one of the only unis in the UK to offer a course in Material Science and Engineering. This course is also very different to what students may find in Indonesia.

Preparation for Work

Queen Mary shows its efforts in preparing students for work in different activities in the classroom. Students will experience these types of activities in his course. For example, within Material Science and Engineering there is an activity called problem based learning. In this activity students are required to solve an open ended question within a randomly selected group. Students find this beneficial as it helps prepare students for working in groups in working job scenarios and allows him to improve his ability to be open minded to new ideas within discussions.

Intensity

The level of intensity studying Engineering in Queen Mary is relatively manageable. In terms of time spent studying, on average a student can spend 5 hours a day. He adds 2 hours of studying to his routine when revising a new chapter. Additionally, the competition between students is relaxed most of the time. Students find their peers to be helpful during lectures and problem-solving activities in class. However, during exams and when doing coursework students tend to become more competitive.

Overall, Queen Mary is a great choice for a research oriented student. Also, it helps students prepare for the future with classes that combine theoretical knowledge and practical soft-skills. Studying at Queen Mary can be manageable due to the study time required and relatively helpful student body.
