The Economics course at LSE offers modules in many different fields of study within the social sciences. LSE is known as a career-focused university and for good measure as it offers a wide range of opportunities to prepare for and connect with the professional world. First, LSE provides a world class career service where students can consult with the staff and receive extensive assistance in matters regarding their future career. Also, LSE accommodates numerous student societies. These societies hold incredible career events, are filled with incredible students which makes for a great networking opportunity and are incredibly varied covering any career pathway an LSE student could want to chase. For example, a career event held by an LSE student society invited the global COO of macro research at Morgan Stanley who explained the inner-workings of one of the foremost investment banks in the world.

Intensity

Studying Economics at LSE is generally intense for a student. Although classes range from 3-5 hours a day, self-study and extracurricular activities will extended working hours are advised to fully utilise the chance to study at LSE. For example, socialising and participating in societies take up to 4-6 hours a day. Also, the student interaction at LSE is quite competitive. Prospective students should be warned that although students are willing to assist each other, studying at LSE requires a large amount of individual effort in traversing one of the world’s most difficult Economics courses.

LSE’s Finance course’s main strength is its impressive personnel from the teaching staff and the student’s themselves. Firstly, the teaching staff consists of leading experts in the field of study and combine practical and theoretical teaching methods to educate students. For example, the department offers a day-long trading simulation where participants rotate across desks. This helps train students in applying theoretical knowledge into practice.

Furthermore, the cohort each year is relatively small. This ensures that the students admitted into this course are great students and driven individuals outside of the classroom. Additionally, it allows students to become very connected with each other. This builds a fantastic atmosphere for each individual student to grow and learn from each other.

Preparation for work

LSE prepares students greatly for the professional world as it boasts encouraging numbers in terms of placement and a rigorous three year course. Firstly, this course has a high placement rate into investment banks and the finance industry. For example, graduates of this course go on to work at fantastic banks such as Lazard, Perella Weinberg, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Rothschild, UBS, JP Morgan and others that are too many to list. Within LSE Law students are exposed to opportunities that will be beneficial for the career from the department and their cohort. Firstly, the department and Law Society are extremely influential in helping students connect with the professional world. For example, in November of 2019 the LSE Law Society held an event called the Know the City legal forum. Events such as this are in abundance throughout the year for LSE students and extremely useful in getting in touch with barristers’ chambers and law firms.

Also, the student body pushes each other to become higher achievers outside of the classroom.There is a strong Linkedin culture where students are expected to post what internship or leadership positions they get selected for. This is beneficial in both pushing students to become more proactive and improve their qualifications. Also, this level of competition is complemented by the aforementioned extensive student support to ensure that students are indulging in this culture healthily.

Intensity

LSE Law’s intensity varies depending on a student’s personal ambitions. there are ways for students to clear up time. For example, as lectures are recorded and an extensive amount of further reading is optional, students are able to select how much work they can do. Also, contact hours in a day are of a rational amount at around 6 hours a day.

Overall, LSE Law is a great choice for a student who wants to pursue their academic ambitions in a supported environment. It can also push students to work harder in terms of extracurricular positions and is definitely reliable in securing a job in the future.
