Overview:

Economic History at LSE may not be viewed as a subject within the field of political science, but it is an interesting option which can segue into the fields of history, economics and political science. This course is an interesting option for students who are interested in events in history viewed through the lenses of an economist and politician.

Special Quality:

Economic History is delivered by LSE in a way that is stimulating for the students. This is exemplified in the teaching staff’s emphasis on comprehensive analysis. For example, during a lesson in one of the modules, the students were presented with a graph mapping the different weights of slaves based on their age. The tutor then proceeded to put these figures into perspective by explaining how these slaves were malnourished based on their age with additional exposition of personal accounts. This left a significant impact on the students as it showed the deeper significance of data on a graph by explaining the brutal reality behind them.

Preparation for Work:

LSE provides various channels to help students prepare themselves for their professional careers. Firstly, in the classroom there are numerous modules which focus on quantitative and analytical skills that will be used in the professional world. For example, these skills are taught in a module which focuses on the use of excel and statistics that could be useful in a career finance. Furthermore, the Department of Economic History exposes students to career opportunities. This is done in different ways such as career consultations, monthly career events and networking events. Also, LSE Career Services are extremely helpful in assisting students regarding professional opportunities. Primarily, they provide workshops events on job related skills which help guide students to potential work opportunities.

Intensity:

Economic History at LSE is generally intense but can be managed to have an enjoyable uni experience. Firstly, in terms of student interaction Economic History can be considered quite chill amongst other LSE courses, but it is still a competitive course. This is because students are very self motivated and the teaching staff holds them to high standards. Also, this course takes 10 hours of classroom time per week with an extensive amount of self study required. Self study includes essays, reading, group assignments and revision which can become rather hectic if not managed well. However, the time LSE takes out of a student’s life can be managed to be able to have an ample amount of free time.

Overall, Economic History at LSE is a very stimulating course which challenges students to become proactive learners. It is a very good option for anyone interested with topics within this field.
