PPI London X Access Education: Tips and Tricks

There are several things that you should keep note of when conducting yourself during the recruitment process. These are not only essential in getting recruited but also important to really know how you can contribute to PPI London. These tips are shared with the intent of not only maximising your chances of being recruited but also ensuring you understand why you are applying for recruitment.

This account of PPI London is provided by Stella van Herry, a Secretary of PPI London 2020/2021, and Mutiara Ayu Shakira, a second year Bsc Politics and International Relations student at University College London and a Secretary of PPI London 2020/2021.

  1. Choose your preferred team/department and craft your motivational answers accordingly!

PPI London has, in total, 10 team divisions you can join into. Make sure to research the different job descriptions and programs of each respective departments (you can also reach out to the secretariat for more information), and decide which one you want to be a part of!

Some departments receive higher interest from applicants, and thus are more competitive. If you have a strong preference for a department, make sure you show this in your motivational answers! Be specific about your work and achievements, and tell the recruiters why you want to be a part of this department. For instance, if you’re keen on joining the Community Service department, you can write about your volunteer/fundraising experiences and this will be a plus point! Moreover, the Creative Media department will require you to showcase your portfolio, so make sure to keep that in mind and prepare all the administrative requirements well!

But don’t worry, everyone applying will be considered, and even if you don’t get into your first choice, our recruiters will allocate you to one that fits your experiences and skills perfectly!

They will take a look at your CV and get to know more about you during your interview!

  1. Prepare your CV and be yourself!

A lot of students applying to PPI London are first-year undergraduates. We understand that being straight out of high school, you may not have encountered a lot of situations in which you were asked to create a CV. However, please don’t let this demotivate you! We’re not looking for the perfect CV, but we’re looking to allocate you to the best department that aligns well with your skills, experiences, and interests!

Just be yourself and be honest! For instance, if you don’t have previous design experiences but still want to join the Creative Media department, this is completely fine! Your achievements will still be considered extremely valuable to the team, and you can start working on a couple of simple designs to submit to PPI London. During the interview, you can then defend your interest and tell us why you want to join the design team even with no prior experiences (I’m sure you have strong reasons for this!).

Finally, our recruiters are students like you, so we understand that you may want to explore and go out of your comfort zones. Therefore, in your CVs, just be yourself, and in the interview, defend your interests!

3. Prove that you’re a team player!

PPI London needs a team player who can work great in teams and communicate well with each member! Make sure to tell your interviewer that you are qualified for this, because PPI London is essentially a students organization run by students for students – we want to grow and prosper together as a team and would like for you to have that team spirit as well!

Lastly, just have fun! Again, this is a students organization. As long as you’re a student studying in London and have fulfilled all the administrative requirements, we want you to be a part of PPI London! We’re all super excited when a new recruitment cycle gets opened and are all looking forward to meeting new faces in our team.

Good luck, and make sure to apply to the 2021 cycle!

PPI London X Access Education: Process

Recruitment into the organisation follows a particular process. Its important to be informed of this process as to prepare appropriately to ensure admission. Today we will be discussing the process of being recruited into PPI London and how you should prepare to increase your chances of acceptance.

This account of PPI London is provided by Medina Rahma Putri, a third year Philosophy, Politics and Economics student at King’s College London and Secretary General of PPI London 2020/2021.

PPI London always holds an open recruitment for PPI London administrators at the beginning of the new academic year; around September to October. Instagram @ppilondon will definitely post an open recruitment, and usually a form will be prepared for registration as a member of PPI London. However, all Indonesian students in London are registered within PPI London. Open recruitment and registration is only necessary if students are interested in becoming the board of PPI London. As long as the applicant is a student at one of the universities in London, he or she is allowed to become the board of PPI London.

Actually there are no formal requirements and we are very open to registration from any level of education; Undergrad, Masters, PhD, etc. But if the applicant has experience that can help in the division they are listing then it is very useful. For example, if you want to register as an administrator of the Media Kreatif division, maybe the applicant has experience using Photoshop, or for example the final cut pro. Or another example, suppose the applicant wants to become a member of the Pengabdian Masyarakat division, maybe that person has experience in fundraising or other charity work. However, PPI London is very welcome for anyone from any background of experience. We will both learn together and participate within PPI London.

There will be a process interview, to get to know the prospective members of the PPI London board and whether or not they are suitable for the job desc of the division they have registered to. This is because applicants can apply for one division, but it could turn out that they are more suitable to work in another division or maybe those who register don’t understand the job descriptions of the divisions they are registering, so from here we match them to which division they are more comfortable. Surely we will also ask, whether they are willing to enter another division or not, because there is also a possibility that the list will be transferred to another division. But this will not be done without the approval of those listed, because yes we also want the management to be happy to run the PPI London organisation.

Usually after recruitment is finished, the first meeting is with each division. So, it is only around December that PPI London holds a team building for the entire board. This is one of the most exciting and memorable experiences. December 2019, we have team building at the Wisma Siswa Merdeka where the activities are eating together, playing games; basically it is very impressionable because it builds solidarity and brings together the different members of the organisation. Unfortunately because of Covid-19, this year many are still in Indonesia and we cannot hold any events yet. Finally yesterday we held Zoom calls together for inaugurations and also zoom calls per division for introductions. There were also team building activities per division as well.

PPI London X Access Education: Kajian Riset dan Strategis

Divisi Kajian Riset dan Strategis can be viewed as a development center for students who wish to delve into research. This division houses research activities done for the benefit of the Indonesia student community in London. Any student looking to further their research skills or share their knowledge should seriously consider joining this division.

This account of PPI London is provided by Sheena Abigail, a second year Physics student at University College London and Head of PPI London 2020/2021 Divisi Kajian Riset dan Strategis.

This unit mainly focuses on providing opportunities and a platform for Indonesian students to create and develop themselves. In doing this, we encourage students to create and produce works through the Terbitan Pelajar program. Through this program, every month we socialize a certain topic, often related to global or local issues, and we welcome submissions of all forms (from written to artwork) from all students. We will then curate those submissions to be published on the PPI London website. Meanwhile, in the London Menyapa Podcast program, we, whether that only be the kastrat unit or with other students as guests, discuss global and local issues, also giving our opinions to hopefully spark discussion within the Indonesian student community and keep them informed on relevant issues in their free time.

This unit always works towards a shared goal that PPI London has, which is increasing solidarity between Indonesian students in London and being a platform for Indonesian students to excel and develop themselves. Consequently, by being in this unit you are continuously working towards that goal as well. Through our programs built to provide room to create and be vocal, we are not only facilitating those who are seeking to have their works seen and be heard by others, but by encouraging and welcoming submissions, we are also encouraging students to be productive. Since the submissions for Terbitan Pelajar and involvement in the London Menyapa Podcast are not limited to only Indonesian students in London, students around the world have an equal chance of participating as well.

Personally by joining PPI London not only have I expanded my network but I’ve gained experience in working within an organisation and just really go out of my comfort zone as I don’t typically lead groups and communicate with others.

This division does not require people experienced in writing articles or hosting podcasts, though that would be a plus, but we look for people who are curious, filled with ideas and driven.

PPI London X Access Education: Divisi Pengabdian Karir

Divisi Pengabdian Masyarakat fulfills PPI London’s responsibility to contribute to society. The society in questions is mainly focused in Indonesia as being far from home in London does not diminish these students’s love for their country. Joining this division is a great way to channel your nationalism and altruism in helping people in need.

This account of PPI London is provided by Amelia Hartono, President of PPI London 2020/2021 Divisi Pengabdian Masyarakat.

The Career Development Division of PPI London is in charge of handling events and providing resources to Indonesian students in London surrounding their career, regarding topics such as career opportunities, career paths, advice from alumni, networking with professionals, and many more. The ultimate goal is to provide guidance and information to students so that they can start or further their careers with confidence, be it in London or elsewhere.

Finding a job after graduating university has always been a main concern for students, and the Covid-19 pandemic has only further exacerbated this concern as employment grows more competitive with companies cutting down on hiring new employees. By joining this division, one has the chance to take part in alleviating these concerns for fellow students and bridging the information gap for them.

In our most recent webinar last December for example, we held a career talk that broadly covered 3 different career paths/industries namely entrepreneurship, finance industry and the tech industry. During which, we were able to answer questions asked by attendees regarding their concerns about working in the UK as a minority, but also addressing more personal issues in deciding one’s career path. This demonstrated the type of problems that we are able to address and help people with which is incredibly rewarding especially knowing ourselves the difficulties of being a student and starting a career in London.

The benefits of joining the Career Development Division overlap with those of joining a big student-run organization like PPI London itself. It will allow members to hone their soft-skills such as communication, teamwork, time-management, and leadership as well. However, the benefit of joining this division specifically would be the chance to bring about events regarding career paths or industries often neglected, choosing and interacting with event speakers who are professionals in their respective fields, as well as having a broader knowledge on the careers and opportunities available.

Anyone of any skillset would prove to be valuable in the division, but a keen interest in careers and knowledge of the resources available as well as a good professional network we can draw on would be a plus. Soft-skills in particular would be most important as one needs to be able to communicate and work alongside various team members both within the division and outside of it to coordinate things like social-media posts and poster design for an event for example.

As a part of the Indonesian student community where we roam to London for knowledge, we would like to give back something to our country. Not only knowledge but also sharing our compassion and love. This year, the Community Service team has the vision to support Indonesian children’s education through books, donation, and sponsorship. We also concern about people back home who are suffering from the current COVID-19 pandemic and would like to lend a hand to support them getting through this difficult time.
