Studying Law will expose students to a subject that encompasses various different facets of human life in fields such as finance law or family law. These legal equivalents of normal human life should be viewed with the presence of humanity as matters regarding the subject ultimately determine people’s welfare.
In a global city such as London, the study of law is perfectly complemented by the city’s legal sector and its vast opportunities. In attempt to facilitate such academic endeavours, it also offers several choices of unis that equip aspiring-law practitioners with high quality education. The unis that will be discussed are UCL, LSE, KCL and Queen Mary University of London.
King’s College London
Overview
King’s College London’s Law course held in the Dickson Poon School of Law is extremely reputable within the UK and rivals other top courses such as Oxbridge and UCL. Studying Law at king’s comes with various challenges and benefits that other universities cannot provide.

Special Quality
KCL Law is interesting due to its teaching of law itself. KCL Law is able to keep learning Law interesting as it highlights the storytelling side of the subject. It is challenging in analysing the precedent to ascertain a concrete timeline of cause and effect and synthesising those facts with theoretical knowledge to argue a case within the legal boundaries set in the specific circumstances. This arduous task of analysis and synthesis is extremely painstaking due to the amount of reading and meticulousness needed. However, it is also an extremely interesting task as the student is in near full control of the outcome and when the outcome goes in the favour of the student the satisfaction is unparalelled.

Preparation for Work
KCL Law is extremely competent in its classroom teaching. The education that KCL Law offers is structured within the standardised mould of most UK Law courses but with increased quality in its teaching. KCL Law is able to prepare students with practical skills and theoretical knowledge for legal careers such as being solicitors or barristers. Also, the knowledge taught in KCL Law classrooms can be built upon for careers outside of law such as consulting or finance.
Intensity
King’s Law is relatively intense depending on a student’s learning habit. King’s Law is a notoriously challenging course and most of a student’s study time is spent completing reading. Doing the reading will prove to be very beneficial but students are not necessarily expected to read it to absolute completion. As a result, a King’s Law student’s study time really does depend on a student’s commitment and can range from 3-10 hours per day. Also, student interaction is healthily competitive. Students are competitive to a degree which is constructive in each other’s development.

Queen Mary University of London
Overview
Although its reputation may not be as stellar as UCL or Oxbridge in the UK, Queen Mary’s Law school deserves to be regarded amongst the best law schools in London. This account of Queen Mary University of London Law School is Provided by Zania R. Putri, a second year Law student of the institution.

Special Quality
Coincidentally, Queen Mary’s main strength also ties in its preparing students for work. Firstly, the university has strong connections with the professional legal world. This can be shown within the Queen Mary law club Zania participates in as Head of Marketing which is partnered with 50+ law firms and 10+ banks and are very helpful in networking and securing a profession overall.
Also, Queen Mary provides many placement opportunities at law firms’ pro bono offices. Last year, Zania did her placement at Dentons Pro Bono Clinic as a pro bono assistant. Dentons is a highly regarded law firm and this shows Queen Mary’s ability to assist students in putting theory into practice and increasing the value of a student’s accumulated qualifications. To further add to that, this year she will be working at Queen Mary’s Legal Advice Centre as a legal advisor. This shows that Queen Mary is able to guarantee opportunities as Zania was able to secure one in her second year and the quality of those opportunities are consistently of high quality. Overall, Queen Mary shows great strength in offering students opportunities to learn beyond the classroom which helps them enhance their theoretical understanding, practical capabilities and attractiveness as prospective employees.

Intensity
Queen Mary Law School is quite intense as most law schools are. Firstly, the competition between students is quite intense depending on a student’s career choice. For Zania, Queen Mary Law School is quite intense as she is pursuing a career in commercial law. On the other hand, aspiring to become a solicitor comes with less intense competitiveness. Even so, Zania claims to have found good friends within this competitive setting and believes that this atmosphere is more constructive than destructive.
Also, due to the nature of the legal professional world, a career as a lawyer requires a 2:1. In Queen Mary it is relatively difficult to achieve, but doable.
However, studying law at Queen Mary is very reasonable due to its several flexibilities. First, Queen Mary Law School offers Law in combination with another course such as Business or Politics. This is beneficial to students who are not as committed to the intensity of studying law on its own or who simply wish to branch out and explore other fields of study.
Also, Queen Mary provides excellent student support. Queen Mary provides a wide range of support from academic to personal from their academic advisors, tutors, head of faculty, mental therapist and career advisor.
Moving on, Queen Mary usually requires 6-10 hours of commitment every uni day and 12-17 once exams start. Although this may seem quite intense it still leaves students with time to indulge in extracurricular activities such as the aforementioned placements or competitions in mooting and negotiations.
Overall, Queen Mary Law School is a very good practical university that focuses its strengths outside the classroom coupled with strong support from the university. Even so, grades should be maintained as the legal professional world is cutthroat in its recruitment. So if your preference is a more practical and supportive academic experience then Queen Mary is definitely a good shout.

London School of Economics and Political Science
Overview
LSE is known as one of the best universities in the world when it comes to subjects based in the humanities, and law is no exception. An extremely low admissions rate and a law faculty known throughout the country, LSE Law is a well-renowned course.

Special Quality
LSE Law gives excellent support to its students. LSE Law, like any other law course, can be a very intense and stressful course, especially since LSE Law is academically rigorous. To alleviate the burdens it places on students, LSE provides a wide range of support. For example, students are assigned an academic mentor and a personal wellbeing mentor who they can turn to when they experience difficulties both personally and academically. This is incredibly helpful as it shows that students are being well taken care of and they can focus on preparing themselves for the future with less burdens to bear.

Preparation for Work
Within LSE Law students are exposed to opportunities that will be beneficial for the career from the department and their cohort. Firstly, the department and Law Society are extremely influential in helping students connect with the professional world. For example, in November of 2019 the LSE Law Society held an event called the Know the City legal forum. Events such as this are in abundance throughout the year for LSE students and extremely useful in getting in touch with barristers’ chambers and law firms.
Also, the student body pushes each other to become higher achievers outside of the classroom. There is a strong Linkedin culture where students are expected to post what internship or leadership positions they get selected for. This is beneficial in both pushing students to become more proactive and improve their qualifications. Also, this level of competition is complemented by the aforementioned extensive student support to ensure that students are indulging in this culture healthily.
Intensity
LSE Law’s intensity varies depending on a student’s personal ambitions. there are ways for students to clear up time. For example, as lectures are recorded and an extensive amount of further reading is optional, students are able to select how much work they can do. Also, contact hours in a day are of a rational amount at around 6 hours a day.
Overall, LSE Law is a great choice for a student who wants to pursue their academic ambitions in a supported environment. It can also push students to work harder in terms of extracurricular positions and is definitely reliable in securing a job in the future.

University College London
Overview
UCL’s Law program is widely regarded as one of the best in the whole of the UK and the whole world. They boast one of the lowest admission rates and a high-quality teaching staff to educate their students. This account of University College London is provided for Flora Chung, a second year student Law student of the institution.

Special Quality
Amongst its many advantages in teaching law, a particular strength of UCL Law lies in its extracurricular events. Primarily, UCL’s law society takes a very active role in arranging a wide range of activities for its students’ future careers. For example, the Law society has career events every Monday which hosts scheduled visits from top law firms and networking events. A notable presentation Flora recalls was one by Weil Gotshal and Manges. This firm emphasised their extra activities beyond commercial legal practice such as fulfilling their social responsibilies and promoting diversity programs. For example, they presented their involvement in supporting students of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC, PALS and PENCILS program in exposing young adults to career opportunities in the legal professional world. These events alternate their focus on careers as barristers and solicitors so all students receive an even level of support.
Also, UCL’s Law Society holds socials to strengthen the bond between students within the faculty. The Law society holds many balls or socials such as a 2 week law student only Freshers Fortnight which helped Flora build relationships with her fellow peers.

Preparation for Work
UCL is able to prepare their students for work with a mixture of in and out of classroom benefits. For starters, UCL’s teaching staff is world class consisting of leading experts in the field that give insightful tutorials and lectures which are able to encourage debate and critical thinking. For instance, Flora’s tutor in her Public Law module was able to teach her an efficient way of analysing a case. This involved analysing a case from back to front where the conclusion is read beforehand and linked to the paragraphs above it in order to find the final decision of the case. Then the judges decision is discussed. This helped Flora gain a new technique to analyse cases more efficiently and practice a skill used in real life legal practice.
Furthermore, the Law society takes a massive role in connecting students with the professional world. Besides the career and social events previously mentioned, the UCL Law Society provides amazing career support in other forms. For example, the mentorship program they host is helpful in helping students secure internships/schemes.
Intensity
UCL Law’s intensity level is quite high but it is an enjoyable experience. Flora notes that although the course is fast-paced and challenging, curricular and extracurricular activities involving the course are varied, interesting and stimulating. However, she also expresses that a notable downside is the amount of reading that is demanded for every lecture and tutorial.
In general, UCL Law is an incredible option for any law student. Their Law Society can provide an amazing social and professionally preparatory experience while their in class lessons prove to keep a student engaged and stimulated.
