London Series: Food at Garden Halls

Food will lose its status is a staple in a travelling student’s life. Due to this, student’s are often extremely reliant on their halls’ catering service. This is because the catering service at the halls will be a student’s most frequent and cheapest source of food. Student’s should be relieved to hear that Garden Halls provides quality food at uni dorm prices.

Taste:

The catering service at Garden Halls is served in an incredibly well designed dining hall with several different spaces for students to eat from. First, they have the regular dining tables where students can gather in large groups and eat together. Second, the have couches where student can enjoy their meal in a more relaxed siting. Third, they have more private seats where the couches cover the table to be secluded from the rest of the room.

The food at Garden Halls is served at three different times; Breakfast (Weekdays), Lunch (Weekends) and Dinner (Everyday). The overall quality of the meals is very good and students are quite satisfied.

One dish is notable within their lineup is their veggie burger. The veggie burger is a great choice for any resident, as it is very well cooked with a variety of ingredients included in it. Besides their veggie burger, most dishes would be well received by any resident and the halls’ catering services does provide a variety of selections for vegans.

Availability:

In terms of availability, the catered food at Garden Halls is only available at the allotted meal times.

There is a wide selection of grocers and restaurants to choose from around the area. Firstly, The Brunswick, a shopping centre within walking distance of International Hall, offers a various selection of restaurants and grocer. To shop for groceries Waitrose and Sainsbury are available with the former being the more expensive option of the two. Also, The Brunswick has restaurants such as Nando’s, Fuwa Fuwa (A japanese pancake parlour which is frequented by many curious guests), GBK Burgers, Go Sushi and Itsu. Second, the road from the halls to The Brunswick is filled with restaurants such as San Marzano and many other cafes.

London Series: Facilities at Garden Halls (English)

Rooms:

Rooms at Garden Halls vary in selection but are overall very satisfactory. As they are relatively newly built, the designs are quite modern and very accommodating for residents. Additionally, they are quite cheap as dormitory rooms are but are very high in quality.

Common Room:

The Garden Cafe provides a social space where students can interact whether it be socialising or studying together. Located on the ground floor, the modern design provides comfort while complemented by the view of Cartwright Gardens in front of the halls.

Tennis Court:

Garden Halls provides several tennis courts for the leisure of the residents as part of Cartwright Gardens, the park right across the street from the halls. These courts are frequented by players of varying skill levels; from curious beginners to seasoned players looking to maintain their athletic prowess. Residents shouldn’t be shy to arrange a time to use these courts as the friendly environment of the halls encourages students to pursue their interests, tennis included.

Music Room:

The two music rooms are quite similar to each other where both have a piano and guitar. There is no wifi in this room.

Courtyard:

The outside area consists of a small gazebo surrounded by benches. To be honest its quite useless during term time as its usually very cold so nobody bothers to use this area.

Concierge:

The concierge at Garden Halls is essential for handling packages, letting in visitors and arrangement of facility use. The staff are friendly and ready to help with any problems at all times.

Laundry Room:

The Laundry Room serves its function well and students are quite satisfied with it. Although there was a year where the washing machines experienced some technical difficulties so the halls decided to compensate the students by lowering the prices.

Cinema Room:

The cinema room is a great room for students to relax and enjoy a movie with their friends. Equipped with bean bags and a comfortable carpet, this room provides maximum comfort for students to enjoy their favorite flicks.

Garden Halls is an intercollegiate halls of residence run by the University of London. This relatively new halls of residence is equipped with a modern design and excellent facilities for residents. It is situated near various top unis and

London Series: Area at International Hall (English)

Campus:

International Hall is situated incredibly close to several Unis. UCL is 10 minutes away by foot and several of their buildings such as the neuroscience building are right next to the halls. Also, LSE is relatively close to the halls within 15 minutes by foot. City is a bit farther taking about 20 minutes to reach by foot. SOAS is very close to the halls but seeing as they only have one campus it takes 10 minutes to reach it entirely. Additionally, the halls is close to the Senate Library which is accessible by students of the University of London.

Entertainment:

International Hall is close to several entertainment centres. First, UCL is close to the Brunswick which has various activities for residents to choose from. The Brunswick has a cinema in Curzon and a variety of restaurants to spend time in. Also, International Hall is close to Coram’s field which has a football field, basketball field and outdoor gym equipment.

Food:

There is a wide selection of dining options surrounding International Hall. Firstly, there are several restaurants such as Nando’s, Wasabi and Itsu around the are either in or out of The Brunswick. Also, there are several stores that you can buy groceries. Waitrose and Sainsbury Local at The Brunswick along with Tesco are good options to buy groceries. Furthermore, there are several cafes which are worth visiting. The most notable ones are Pret a Manger and Cafe Nero.

Essential Services:

There essential services in the area surrounding International Hall are quite limited. The most notable ones are the NHS Medical Centre at The Brunswick and several post offices around the area. There is also a police station within walking distance around the area on the way to covent garden.

Transport:

There are several options for transport within the area. Russel Square Tube stations is very close to the halls. Kings Cross Station is also within walking distance with a 20 minute journey by foot. Also, there are several bus stops near Russel Square Park which are 10 minutes by foot.

London Series: Events at International Hall (English)

International Hall’s social events is run by their team of hall advisors that frequently plan interesting activities for the residents. These activities are varied and are generally well-received by the residents.

Weekly:

International Hall hosts various amounts of weekly activities and amongst the most popular are football, yoga and movie nights.

Football is usually held every Saturday and frequently attracts a large number of residents. It is played for an hour in one of Coram’s field’s (3 minute walk from International Hall) width-to-width size pitch. It is generally quite a chill activity to have a little fun while exercising in your free time, but can become competitive when the time is running down and the score is close.

Yoga is held weekly for any residents who are interested in joining. Held by a competent instructor who also happens to be a resident, yoga is a good way to alleviate some of the stress a student goes through over the week. It is also a great place to make new friends and bond with existing ones.

Movie nights might not exactly be held weekly but are held quite frequently. Movie nights are held in the halls’ movie room which can accommodate a good amount of people and is a good option to spend some free time in the midst of your hectic schedule. Movie nights are often themed in accordance to trends or holidays such as horror month in the month of October to celebrate Halloween. However, residents can also request what movies they want if they can book the room in advance.

Special Occasions:

There are often holiday themed parties at International Halls which are usually hugely popular amongst residents. For example, International Halls hosted a halloween party which was incredibly successful. The party was held in the common room where there were halloween-themed decorations and a DJ who even took requests from the partygoers. Also, the Hall Team manned an pop-up bar selling beverages at insanely cheap prices.

Others:

Sometimes the Hall Team at International Hall hosts random events for the residents to enjoy. For example, they once held a cookie decorating event where residents were given ingredients and could decorate a cookie however they like. This was an interesting event as it was extremely relaxing to focus on something completely unexpected instead of the daily struggles of a student. Other events include ping-pong tournaments, quizzes and dance classes.

London Series: Social Life at International Hall (English)

Social life is an incredibly important part of living in a student accommodation. The opportunity to live with your peers for socialisation or working together on schoolwork is part of the overall uni experience. International Halls is no exception to this common phenomena as social life is a massive part of living there.

Exposure:

For catered residents, social life will be very important as they will dine together frequently. When catered, residents will have to meet each other at least once a day or two assuming they are at the halls at both meal times. This is a great opportunity to meet other residents and befriend them as meeting them is both inevitable and frequent.

Also, there are various areas where students tend to meet up an interact. The common room is a popular choice amongst the students as there are a number of activities to do there. There is a ping-pong table, pool table and couches where students can just converse relaxingly.

Furthermore, the various events at International Hall become great opportunities to meet other students. For example, the weekly sporting events are great at bonding. Playing sports together is quite good at building relationships between people in general, especially if its done regularly. The regular sporting events at International Hall allow you to continue to hang out with the people you play with at various other times giving you an opportunity to deepen the relationship.

Interaction:

The resident interaction at International Hall is very positive. Residents here are generally welcoming and love the opportunity to make new friends. As a result, it is very easy to integrate yourself into the community to help make your uni experience a fun one.

Also, International Hall houses a very diverse resident pool. Residents will meet people from a large variety of backgrounds and should not worry about feeling out of place.
