Studying Economics is incredibly interesting as students can learn a wide range of subjects that are extremely specialised. The Economics course at LSE offers modules in many different fields of study within the social sciences. For example, there are numerous economics, finance and politics courses available for students to choose from as Economics major. For example, LSE offers two different introductory courses for econometric with differing levels of mathematical difficulty. This is only possible as LSE is extremely focused on the social sciences with a world-class teaching staff boasting personnel such as the former Governor of the Bank of England and a Nobel Prize winning economist.

LSE is known as a career-focused university and for good measure as it offers a wide range of opportunities to prepare for and connect with the professional world. First, LSE provides a world class career service where students can consult with the staff and receive extensive assistance in matters regarding their future career. Also, LSE accommodates numerous student societies. These societies hold incredible career events, are filled with incredible students which makes for a great networking opportunity and are incredibly varied covering any career pathway an LSE student could want to chase. For example, a career event held by an LSE student society invited the global COO of macro research at Morgan Stanley who explained the inner-workings of one of the foremost investment banks in the world.

Intensity

Studying Economics at LSE is generally intense for a student. Although classes range from 3-5 hours a day, self-study and extracurricular activities will extended working hours are advised to fully utilise the chance to study at LSE. For example, socialising and participating in societies take up to 4-6 hours a day. Also, the student interaction at LSE is quite competitive. Prospective students should be warned that although students are willing to assist each other, studying at LSE requires a large amount of individual effort in traversing one of the world’s most difficult Economics courses.

Overall, LSE is an incredible choice to study Economics. The opportunities in and outside of the classroom provided are without a doubt world class, but they come at a price where students have to endure a gruelling academic journey.

Special Quality

A strength of UCL in its Economics course is the support received from its teaching staff. Economics at UCL is extremely rigorous, especially considering its heavily mathematically-oriented curriculum. UCL supports such difficult academic standards by providing an extensive amount of academic support towards their students. For example, students are given weekly assignments that they will do and be given feedback by their tutors. This is extremely helpful towards a students learning process as not only are they trained to improve their knowledge of economics rigorously, but this is done in tandem with extra care from the teaching staff to ensure that students are developing well. Also, students are always open to consult teaching staff outside of designated teaching time. Tutors are always willing to help students which shows how dedicated UCL is towards its mission of education.

Preparation for Work

UCL mainly prepares students for work by education in the classroom. UCL’s modules are not only designed to equip students with theoretical mastery of economics, but they draw a clear relation between the aforementioned knowledge and its application in real life. For example, the applied economics module teaches students about data collection and how to use STATA. These skills are particularly useful in economic research.

Intensity

The Economics course at UCL is relatively intense. On average, Chris spends 6-8 hours of his day committed to his lessons. Additionally, competition can be intense at times. Applying for internships and academically can be difficult as students are very driven.

Overall, UCL Economics is an extremely suitable course for students who are driven and will be beneficial for the future.

A notable quality of studying computing at Imperial is the level of support received. Firstly, the teaching staff is not only world class but provides extensive amounts of assistance towards students. students find that in classes such as lab sessions and tutorials they receive plenty of help to be able to develop their academic prowess. Classes at Imperial unveil insight into professional computing conduct. For example, students experienced this implicit lesson during a group coding activity in one of his classes. They discovered that coding individually is vastly different to coding into a group. As a result, an explicit statement of the purpose of coding an individual in a group writes is imperative as the other members may not understand the outcome of inputting that code. This is will be very beneficial in preparing students for the future as they expect that group coding will be a regular duty in his career.

Computing at Imperial is very intense and takes up most of a student’s day. Their classes are generally from 9-6 and time at home is spent revising material or completing a coding assignment. In terms of student contact, Imperial’s learning environment is quite calm as students are not in direct competition but support each other willingly.

Overall, Imperial is an amazing uni study coding at. Their teaching will ensure that enough support is given for students to succeed academically and be prepared for the future.

The course UCL offers is notably intense academically. Firstly, the curriculum is very challenging. As a result of the difficulty, mastery of knowledge taught on this course is very rewarding and will be very useful in the future. Second, the lack of academic support from the institution forces the student body to become heavily independent learners. This is shown in the typically long hours a student will have to sacrifice in order to succeed academically and the active role RUMS takes in helping students in their academic and personal life.

UCL is able to offer placement opportunities that will help students in the future. Shrey notes that in his first year that his placement opportunities consisted of preclinical medicine such as patient experience. He views this as relatively inapplicable yet. However, he states UCL has an advantage over other unis as it offers placements at incredibly reputable Hospitals such as the Royal Free hospital.

Intensity

UCL Medicine is incredibly intense academically. In term time, medicine students are likely to spend more time than students in other courses in terms of contact hours (9am-5pm lessons) and at least 2 hours of studying everyday. Also, students are forced to start studying for second year in the summer following his first year. However, socially, UCL medicine is an inclusive group. Most students have good communication skills and it is very easy to make friends. He also mentions that his cohort is generally less international than other courses.

Overall, UCL Medicine is very strong academically and in terms of placement. Success in this course will very much depend on the students individual determination and ability to cooperate with other students in classroom and society settings.

Biochemistry at King’s is notable for its peer assisted teaching. This is executed by having senior students interact with their juniors to provide assistance in a wide variety of matters. First, this course integrates soft-skills needed to have a successful career into their classroom curriculum. For example, a sizable portion of the academic year’s lectures are dedicated in training students to secure a job such as CV writing and interview skills. Also, the course frequently invites companies to both inform student’s about themselves and recruit. These visits often involve the companies explaining the working experience to be had in their company and may offer job or internship opportunities for selected students.

Intensity:

Biochemistry at King’s is relatively manageable. First, although contact hours may vary each week, they are relatively run at manageable pace and are complemented by small workshops/tutorials 2-3 times a week. Self-study is advised as 2-3 days of the week should be spent in the library and each day should have a portion dedicated to revision. Furthermore, student interaction in this course is generally quite cooperative especially in the first year since student’s learn different subjects to determine where their interests lie (part of the common year one program).

Overall, Biochemistry at King’s is a fantastic option for students interested in research surrounding medicine. It offers good professional exposure and a healthy learning atmosphere.

The teaching staff at King’s employ a creative and engaging pedagogy useful in presenting topics in a way that students will find easier to relate with. This type of teaching is particularly useful during the initial stages of uni. For example, the teaching staff at King’s were able to help ease students into the political philosophy class by using Game of Thrones as a reference. This was seen during the teaching of the topic sovereignty which was compared to Daenerys Targaryen, a protagonist of the show, conquering the 7 kingdoms within the show. This was incredibly effective as an introductory lesson as the students were familiar with the aforementioned events of the show and were able to recognise elements of sovereignty fairly easily.

Preparation for Work

King’s offers a wide range of career support which is concentrated to outside of their classrooms. First, King’s has a career and employability website which connects students with professional opportunities. This website catalogues job and internship opportunities for students to choose from along with insight opportunities for the Department of Political Economy. Also, King’s offers a wide range of societies for students to participate in. These societies are able to connect students with companies who are willing to offer work opportunities.

Intensity

Studying Political Economy at King’s is relatively manageable but requires a certain extent of independent learning. First, contact hours generally take around 9-10 hours a week. This generally leaves an ample amount of time for students to pursue their personal endeavours quite comfortably. Furthermore, students are expected to spend a lot of their time for self-studying. For example, reading is expected to be done prior to classes as they generally essential in understanding the material taught. Also, students are generally competitive in a constructive manner. Classes in Political Economy are usually filled with debates between students when discussing certain subjects. These debates are quite fun as they do not only allow students to train their critical thinking and analysis skills, but also exposes the individual student to different kinds of viewpoints.
